Have You Inspected Your Furnace Yet?

Winter is around the corner: have you neglected this necessary checkup?

If you’re like most Canadians, you have at least turned on the heat once or twice to get the house warmed up, even if you’re not relying on it day after day, all day, just yet. However, turning your furnace on for the winter is foolhardy if you haven’t inspected it yourself (if you’re handy) or hired a professional to handle this. Furnace maintenance is critical every fall to ensure your unit can make it through the winter months safely and efficiently.

Your annual furnace check-up should include inspection of the following:

Thermostat: Inadequate temperature regulation will occur if this isn’t addressed. This involves checking the connection between the furnace and each thermostat to ensure they are all communicating smoothly with one another. Cleaning and calibrating the thermostat is an important part of this task.

Filters: Check the manufacturer recommendations on your filter to find out when they are due to be cleaned or changed. Because they build up dirt and dust over time, air flow is restricted and causes inefficient operation.

Electrical Connections: Your HVAC professional will check all wiring, that it’s intact and operating properly, with no signs of fraying or wear and tear. Any loose connections should be tightened at this point as well.

Cracks: Cracks in the heat exchanger can cause deadly carbon monoxide to leak into the home.

Moving Parts: All moving parts should be lubricated so they don’t seize up – much like the engine of your car.

Miscellaneous

Scheduling a furnace tune-up with your heating professional right away means you can have the unit completely inspected before you really get going with your heating schedule for the winter. They typically work off a standard checklist, including checking the following:

  • Electrical components and controls
  • Air flow and air fuel mixture
  • Filter
  • Evaporator coil
  • Gas pressure regulator
  • Pilot assembly
  • Burners and controls
  • Leaks and cracks
  • Flue piping
  • Safety switches and devices
  • Belts
  • Crankcase heater
  • Thermostat
  • Condensate drain
