Who this filter is for
The Dual 9 is a good choice if you want to change your filter less often while keeping MERV 9 filtration.
It can also make sense if filter changes are easy to forget, or if your filter is difficult to reach, for example in an attic, ceiling, rooftop unit or commercial building.
Because it is designed to hold more dust than a basic pleated filter, it can stay in service longer before it needs to be replaced.
What it catches
MERV is a rating that tells you how well a filter captures airborne particles. A higher MERV rating means finer filtration.
As a MERV 9 filter, the Dual 9 is rated to capture at least:
Large particles
Pollen, dust, mould spores
Medium particles
Fine dust, soot
Minimum efficiencies for MERV 9 under ASHRAE Standard 52.2.
The Dual 9 is a step up from MERV 8 filtration. If you want finer filtration, Camfil also offers MERV 11 and MERV 13 options.
Why it lasts
Two layers, not one. The Dual 9 uses two layers of filter media. The first captures larger particles, while the second captures finer ones.
More media to hold more dust. The pleated design fits more filter media inside the same frame. Camfil states that the Dual 9 can hold up to four times more dust than general commercial-grade pleated filters before reaching capacity.
Pleats that stay open. A welded wire grid supports the pleats and helps keep them evenly spaced as the filter loads with dust. This helps air continue moving through the filter during its service life.

Why MERV-A matters
Some filter media can rely partly on an electrostatic charge to capture particles. That effect can decrease over time.
The Dual 9 uses mechanical particle capture and is rated both MERV 9 and MERV-A 9-A.
MERV-A is measured after the filter media has been conditioned to reduce the effect of temporary electrostatic charge. It gives a better indication of how the filter performs without relying on that temporary charge.
Camfil also guarantees the Dual 9 to maintain MERV 9 efficiency during its stated service life in its specified commercial and industrial applications.

Designed to keep air moving
The Dual 9 uses radial pleats and a supported media design to help keep resistance low as the filter collects dust.
Camfil gives the Dual 9 its 5-Star Energy Cost Index rating and reports energy savings of up to 25% per filter opening compared with lower-cost pleated filters. Actual savings depend on the HVAC system, operating time and conditions.
Camfil also reports that improved filtration can reduce the need for coil and system cleaning compared with MERV 7 and MERV 8 filters.
What can make it fill up faster
How long a filter lasts depends on how much dust is in the air and how often air moves through it.
It may fill up faster with:
- Dogs or cats
- Renovations, sanding or woodworking
- Construction or dusty roads nearby
- Other high-dust conditions around the home
A cleaner environment may allow the same filter to stay in service longer.
If your thermostat fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, air moves through the filter much more often, so it can fill up sooner. That simply means more air is being filtered.
A higher price per filter can still cost less over time
The Dual 9 costs more per filter than a basic pleated filter, but it is designed to stay in service longer.
The better comparison is not the price of one filter. It is how many filters you actually use over a year.
If you replace fewer filters, the total annual cost can be lower, even when each filter costs more. Using fewer filters also means fewer used filters to dispose of over time.

Quick answers
How often should I change the Dual 9?
There is no fixed schedule. Check the filter regularly and replace it when it is visibly loaded with dust or when your HVAC system shows signs of reduced airflow. How quickly that happens depends on how often your system runs and how much dust is in the air.
Is it normal that my Dual 9 looks very dirty?
Yes. The dust you see is material the filter has captured. The Dual 9 is designed to hold a significant amount of dust before it needs to be replaced.
What is the difference between the 1, 2 and 4 inch Dual 9?
The depth must match the filter slot in your HVAC system. A 1-inch, 2-inch and 4-inch filter are not interchangeable just because the length and width are the same. Choose the same depth as your current filter, then compare the exact dimensions before ordering.
My old Camfil filter lists several models. Which one do I have?
Some Camfil filter frames are used for more than one model, such as Farr 30/30, 30/30 Dual 9 or AQ13. Look for the marked box or model identification printed on the frame. That tells you which filter model you have.
