Why this costs more than the generics
We get asked this all the time, and it's a fair question. You'll find filters that look the same for a lot less.
Now, about that MERV number. Nobody checks it. There's no inspector, and no rule that says a filter has to be tested before someone prints a number on the box.
Honeywell does the testing, and puts their name, their address and the country it was made in right on the box. You know who made your filter.
On a cheap listing you often can't even find out what country it came from.
So you're not paying for a fancier filter. You're paying for one somebody stands behind.
Is this your filter?
Pull the old one out and read the edge. If it says any of these, you're in the right place.
- FC100A1029
- Lennox X0583 or X6670
- Carrier FILCCCAR0016
It goes in these air cleaners:
- Honeywell 16x25 F100
- Honeywell 16x25 F200
- Honeywell F150
Honeywell puts it more simply on the box: it fits any Honeywell Home air cleaner that takes a 16x25x4.
Real size: 15-15/16" x 24-7/8" x 4-3/8"
(40.5 x 63.2 x 11.1 cm)
One thing that trips people up. Honeywell prints 16x25x4 on the box, so that's how we sell it. Other stores call the exact same filter a 16x25x5. If you measured yours and got somewhere around four and a half inches deep, this is the one.
Still not sure? Call (888) 315-0105. We do this all day, and we'd rather you order once than twice.
Why the fit matters
A filter only works if it sits tight. This one is built for the F100 and F200 cabinet, with a cardboard brace across the middle that keeps the pleats from collapsing.
When a filter is loose, or when it sags, the air slips around the edges instead of going through it.
And you'd never know. It looks installed. It still looks clean months later. It just isn't catching anything.
What it catches
MERV is just a score for how much a filter holds back. Higher number, more caught. This one is a MERV 11.
- House dust, and the dust you stir up cleaning
- Pollen
- Pet dander
- Mould spores
- Dust mite debris
- Common allergens
Not sure what the numbers mean? Here's MERV explained in plain English.
Want a higher efficiency filter?
The same cabinet takes a MERV 13, the FC200E1029. Worth the money if someone in the house has allergies or asthma.
Straight answer: filters that catch more also slow the air down and make your furnace work harder. For most homes the MERV 11 is the right balance, and it's what Honeywell built the F100 around.
When to change it
Honeywell builds this one to last up to a year, and asks that you change it at least once a year.
There's a blank space on the box to write down the date you put it in. Use it. A year goes by fast, and nobody remembers.
Pets, a dusty house or a renovation, and you'll want to change it sooner. Twice a year is realistic in a busy home.
Which way it goes in
There's a big AIR FLOW arrow on the side of the filter. Point it toward your furnace, the way the air travels.
Backwards, it clogs faster and catches less. Not sure which way the air moves? Here's which way a furnace filter goes in.
